The term hobo nickel is used generically for any engraved or carved coin. Nickels are commonly used but just about every coin has been carved at some point or another.

The origin of the term hobo nickel as I understand it goes something like this: Back when there were actual real hobos around you could make about $1 a day for unskilled labor.

How I came to carve Hobos. by Rick Ferry. Twelve miles or so down river from Wenatchee, Washington is a wide spot in the road known as “Rock Island”.

He soon published the first book on the subject, Hobo Nickels (ASIN BR7SFW), in Both centered on Bo and his carvings. This resulted in some new artists entering the field, most of whom simply copied Bo’s nickel artwork from the illustrations in Romines’s book.

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness and relative softness.

However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations. Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was. Hillsboro Hobo was carved out of a two inch square by six inch tall block of basswood using a Bud Murray Knife # Typical motifs characteristic of the mental picture of a hobo are depicted in this carving.

“Clothes make the man” or in this case “make the hobo” with torn elbow of jacket, torn shoulder seams and torn knee of trousers. As they traveled, hobos looked for ways to fill their time – coins were easy to carry, and carving them took a while.

At the time, a quarter was a lot of money. The dime and cent were too small but oh, the nickel. It was large enough to carve, and inexpensive enough to spare.

Helpful Analogy: “Constructing tramp art was similar to how a bricklayer or mason would assemble a wall – making a whole out of many pieces by stacking and ts were added using a process not unlike the appliqué technique of a quilt maker,” Wallach explains in A Legacy in Tramp Art, his third book on the subject.

Research shows the boom for tramp art began in the third. He said he was given a set of the pliers that had been carved by a hobo he met in his travels. He took them home, studied them, and eventually figured out how to carve a pair for himself.

Carved wooden pliers eventually became Mooney’s calling card and he continued to carve them throughout his life. Hobo nickel carving can effectively be divided into three periods, the first being the time of the old original hoboes.

The second is the intermediate or transitional period following the publication of Romines' book in (and his preceding articles in Coin World in ), which Alpert refers to as the time of the "early modern artists.".

Read the books, "Hobo," by Eddy Joe Cotton for a modern hobo cautionary tale and "Rough Living: An Urban Survival Manual" by Chris Damitio. Both books offer tips for the road, ideas about how to find food and shelter, and useful lists of hobo lore, definitions, and things to avoid.
